Grading Procedures in P.E.

Grades 5-8

Home

The student receives grades in each of the following areas. Each of these areas carries equal weight:

Dressing
Attitude
Fitness
Skill

A student can receive a grade between 95% and 0 for dressing. All students, start with 95. Students are allowed to forget all or part of their uniform once. After that, their grade drops 10 points every time they are missing a part or all of their uniform. In addition students who forget three times are assigned a detention (for purposes of the detention only the first failure to dress is not ignored).

Attitude is a subjective grade based upon the effort that a student puts forth during class. This includes but is not limited to such things as; cooperation with the teacher, willing to work to change and improve their skills, enthusiasm, participating in all activities in class, and cheerfulness.

Class periods begin with fitness activities that consist of running, situps, pushups, and stretching exercises. Each student is expected to put forth effort in improving their abilities m these areas. At the end of the year the Presidents Physical Fitness Test will be administered. The goal of these exercises is to allow students to pass this test. Their grade in this area is not determined by how many or how long, but rather the amount of effort that is put forth in improving their abilities.

Skill is determined in one of two ways. One of the two ways is that skill tests are administered. The skills that are to be tested are announced to the students at the beginning of the unit. Sufficient practice time is given during the unit. All tests for a given unit are averaged with the lowest possible score for any given test being a 50%. The average score is what is used as the skill portion of their grade. The second way is a subjective evaluation based on general skill performance when no specific skill test is administered.
